Gary was born April 2, 1948 in Sioux City, IA to Alvin and Leah (Metcalf) Sulsberger. Gary was raised on a farm near Holly Spring, IA and attended Westwood Community School where he graduated from in 1966. Gary was united in marriage after 38 years together to Bernie Lloyd on December 23, 2012 at German City Church. Gary always had quite a sense of humor, before walking down the aisle, he asked the pastor if he thought he was, “jumping the gun!”
From an early age Gary learned the hard work and resilience it took to be a farmer and those lessons carried through to his adult life as Gary ran a successful farming operation on his family farm. Gary raised horses, hogs, cattle, as well as growing corn and soybeans.
When Gary wasn’t tending to fences you could find him at either Park Jefferson or Interstate Speedway with the guys where he raced his stockcar for several years. Motorcycles were Gary’s other passion. Some of his favorite trips were riding through the mountains in Colorado and touring Canada. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Hucklebuck. After being diagnosed with MS in 1999, Gary was happy just sitting with a cold drink and sharing old stories and the occasional dirty joke with friends and family. He adored his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them and hearing about the many activities they participated in.
Gary is survived by his wife Bernie, two sons Darrin and Wade (Rachel) Sulsberger both of Hornick, a daughter Stephanie (Joe) Guthridge of Kingsley, 7 grandchildren Leiah, Karli, Emie, Jace, Ozzie, Kenliegh, Kamri, 1 great grandson Knox, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gary was preceded in death by both parents Alvin and Leah, a brother Richard (Cathy) Sulsberger, sister Shardell (Don) Reynders, a son Sam Sulsberger, and grandson Garret Sulsberger.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful people at Pioneer Valley Living and Rehab, as well as St. Croix Hospice for their wonderful care and support.
Flowers can be delivered to the church.
