Frederick George Stolen, 89, died at home Wednesday, November 16, 2016 surrounded by his family. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave.
Fred was born on August 5, 1927 in Darlington, Wisconsin, to Viola and TJ Stolen. The family moved to Sioux City in 1939.
Fred worked at the Sioux City Battery Company where he met his “Boss” (wife), Mildred Davis. They were married on September 20, 1947 in Sioux City. To this marriage were born two daughters, Bianca and Kim. After that, he worked construction until he was injured on the job. Fred was very proud of all the ceiling tile he installed in the schools, hospitals, and numerous places around the Midwest.
Fred studied hard and became a member of the Masons. He also joined the Shriner’s along with his father.
From the time Fred was a young boy, he had a love for baseball and played for many years. He was drafted by the New York Giants as a pitcher and third baseman. He turned down their offer because he had just gotten married and players didn’t get paid enough to support a family.
Through the years, Fred umpired and coached for many organizations including Little League, American Legion, Morningside College (15 years) and Briar Cliff (6 years).
Fred started the Sioux City Saints baseball team in 1975 and coached the team for 21 years. He was proud of their overall record of 348 wins and only 93 losses. Fred had a positive influence on many young men over the years. He loved being on the field and with “his boys”. Fred always said of baseball, “If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. I didn’t get rich, but I sure had a lot of fun!”
When Fred was not coaching, he always had time for a story or twenty.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Milly, of 69 years; his daughters, Kim Stolen and Bianca (Larry) DeRocher; son, Chief Petty Officer Stacey Newsome and Dallas Newsome; 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson on the way.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Vi and TJ; one brother, Vernon; and two grandchildren, Tamara and Nathan.
