Obituary

Fidelis "Phyl" Collette Mary Hoffmann went to be with her Lord Jesus on January 15, 2023, from Holy Spirit Assisted Living in Sioux City, Iowa.  Visitation will be at 1 p.m. and the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. on January 23, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Ellendale (rural Merrill, IA) with Rev. Armand Bertrand officiating. Phyl's family would also like to welcome anyone that would like to join us for lunch and a chance to visit from 3:30 to 5:30 P.M in the church basement.

Fidelis was born on May 18, 1925, to Carl and Monica (Freking) Bartosh, in Heron Lake, MN.  Phyl "met" and fell in love with George Hoffmann through letters they exchanged during WWlI.  After George returned home from overseas, they met for the first time and were soon married on June 4, 1946, in Heron Lake, MN.  They lived their life together on a farm west of Merrill, IA, until his death in 2008.  Fidelis was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Ellendale and a member of the Altar Society.  After she lost George, she moved to the Independent Apartments at Holy Spirit in Sioux City.

Fidelis was George's #1 Farm Assistant as well as a Super Mom.  She raised chickens, milked the cows and bottle fed many calves. She was a master gardener and canned her yearly harvest.  She loved to cook and bake, and was noted for her homemade bread, pies, and angel food cake.  But most of all, everyone loved her homemade cinnamon rolls which were a delightful treat for anyone lucky enough to indulge.  Fidelis was also an amazing seamstress, sewing everything from outfits to bridesmaid dresses. She also designed and made veils for weddings & first communions.  Fidelis loved clothes and jewelry, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience of shopping for them.  She was a classy lady; always dressed to the nines and never ever went without her lipstick, which enhanced her beautiful smile.

Fidelis had a very silly sense of humor.  She was a big fan of putting on costumes, hats, makeup, etc., just to entertain and make people laugh. She often played make-believe games with her grandkids and great-grandkids and was good at it because she wasn't afraid to look silly if it meant everyone was having fun...and they did! As the kids grew up, she was their never-ending cheerleader and was so proud of all their accomplishments.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathy of Sioux City, IA, Gayle (Larry) Pietzyk of Hayesville, NC, Diane (Mike) Erdmann of Omaha, NE, and daughter-in-law Donna Hoffmann of Merrill, IA, one dozen grandchildren: Tracy, Ted, Phillip, Shawn, Christopher, Nathan, Carrie Ann, Jeff, Melissa, Brigitte, Shannon and Aaron, twenty great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandsons, a brother and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Marty; great-grandchild, Graysie Lynn Weil; three brothers and four sisters.
