Eugene M. Onnen, 88 of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly of Rolfe, Iowa, died Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the Gentiva hospice in Storm Lake.
Private family services and burial will be at a later date at the Clinton-Garfield Cemetery in Rolfe, Iowa in the Onnen family plot. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.
Eugene Marion Onnen was born on November 25, 1927 to George and Arna (Rickard) Onnen on their farm in Rolfe, Iowa. Eugene was the eldest of four children. At the age of 18, Eugene contracted polio. This affected his right leg and left him with a limp. This disability never stopped him from working hard.
On June 22, 1947 Eugene married Eileen Beverly Johnson. To this union came four children. When time would allow, Eugene enjoyed taking his family and usually neighborhood children to pro wrestling matches in Sioux City and in Storm Lake, the stock car races in Alta, amusement parks in Arnolds Park and Riverside Park, and to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
Eugene also enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards and later in life going to the casinos where he’d play the poker machines and scratch and pull tab tickets. He also played the lottery weekly.
Eugene’s working life mainly consisted of road construction (with the Iowa Road Builders and Hallett Construction) Later in life he drove over the road trucks for TransCon, where he earned several safety certificates and was awarded a million mile ring for accident free driving.
Eugene is survived by his former wife, Eileen, his son David (Paulette) Onnen, daughters Arna Sargent and Mary Onnen; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; a daughter in-law, Sandra Onnen; his sister in law Janice Onnen, a ex son in-law, Scott Tomford, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, son Robert Onnen, son in-law, Ollie Sargent, his siblings, Donald, Mary and Ellis (Butch), other sisters and brother in-laws, a grandson Charles (Chuck) Onnen, a great great grandson Eli Sargent/Van Landingham, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
