Eldon Dean Burris, 79, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Ontario, Calif.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Waterbury Funeral Home in Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Salix. There will be a luncheon after the burial at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Salix.
Eldon Dean Burris was born July 25, 1935, at Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, the son of Vern and Ethel Burris. He grew up there and graduated from East High School in 1954. After graduating, he enjoyed his job delivering water softeners for several years.
In 1957, he volunteered for the United States Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii, where he was a jeep driver and radio operator for two years. Upon his return, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1961. He worked at the post office followed by a three-year printer apprenticeship where he worked in Columbus, Neb., Cheyenne, Wyo., and other towns.
In February 1965, he started as a printer at the Sioux City Journal. He met his future wife, Gloria Wagner, in June 1965, when, as she was leaving her job as a billing clerk at the Journal, he winked at her. She knew at that moment that was the man she would marry. And they did in September 1967.
He left the Journal in 1973. He loved working at Sioux City Gateway Airport doing maintenance work and clearing the runways of snow for 15 years, until he retired in 1988. The kids had many fun times sledding on the custom-made snow piles at the airport.
Besides spending time with his grandchildren, he loved talking with friends, neighbors, relatives, strangers and passers-by alike. His favorite topics were cars, the Air Force (his daughter has served for 19 years) and football. He enjoyed reminiscing about his life and military service with his kids and grandkids, Stephen, Griffin, Ally, Savannah, Ethan and Spencer. He also loved fixing things and tinkering with his tools.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; and his three daughters, Lisa (Chris) Ciccarelli of Torrance, Calif., Lori (Dan) VanBeek of Chino, Calif., and Carrie Franklin of Ontario, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; his parents; and his sister, Verna.
