Duane Michael Tieck, 96, was called home to God on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022. Duane was born on July 10, 1926 in Soldier, Kansas, to Herman and Maryann Tieck. The family then moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where they made a new home and welcomed a second son, Norman.
Toward the end of World War II, Duane became a sailor with the U.S. Navy. When he reported to Quonset Naval Base in Rhode Island, he never expected to meet and fall in love with his future wife. But when the young sailor from Iowa spotted a “really cute redhead” from across the room at a USO-style social event, he forced himself to ask for a dance – and that was it! When he returned home, he proposed to Miss Ora Fallon in a letter, and returned to Rhode Island, where they were married on Dec. 28, 1946. The newlyweds moved to Iowa after the war and spent the rest of their lives together in Iowa. Not long after they arrived, Duane built the couple’s first home with the help of his dad. Duane was creative, hardworking, skilled with his hands. Full of ideas and eager to please his new bride, he proudly created a renovated home from a condemned home that he and his father took apart.
This first little house was the start of their “happily ever after.” Though Duane was a quiet and often stoic man, he was also deeply caring and devoted to his family. He and Ora welcomed three sons: Dennis, David, and Craig. They developed friendships within their neighborhoods, churches, and in Northern Minnesota where they maintained a summer cabin for many years. Duane could often be quoted as saying “Family is everything.” And, truly, his door was always open to loved ones.
Around 1950, Duane became owner of Glass House, Inc., a business which would grow to be a family business when Dennis and David took it over in the mid-1980s. He believed strongly in the Sioux City community - serving on the board of Directors at Sioux City Federal and as a member of the Cosmopolitan Club. Duane, Ora, and their sons were also devoted church members - attending both Concordia Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church.
Duane was cherished as a father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He was and is dearly loved and will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his sons, Dennis (Meryl) Tieck and David (Bev) Tieck; grandchildren, Mike (Lynda) Tieck, Kristin Tieck, Sarah (Michael) Novak, Abigail Tieck, and Adam (Heather) Tieck; great grandchildren, Isaiah, Elias and Grace Tieck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He joins his beloved wife Ora, his parents, his brother, and his youngest son, Craig in Heaven.
