Duane was a first-generation House Mover. That was his hallmark and pride, throughout his career moving houses, farm buildings, and structures along with several industrial equipment, including tugboats, river barges, and locomotives, basically anything that required moving. He did this without any formal education or training only his own will power and determination.  His sons and or the family members helped in these endeavors. His eyes would light up when he would talk about the last unique move he had conquered.

He was a proud member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, and the Au Becker Shrine.  He enjoyed family time, fishing, camping, playing cards, as well as tinkering with welding and anything mechanical. One of his favorite things was cooking for large groups of campers including his family and other Shrine Campers.

Survivors include children, Steven Thompson of Birmingahm Al, Tony (Joy) Thompson, Renee Montriuel, Tabitha (Tim) Lower all of Sioux City IA, stepchildren; Kelly Dean, Albert (Joyce) Sherrill, Doug (Pilar) Sherrill, and numerous grand and great-grandchildren, several nieces, a nephew, and several cousins.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gloria Thompson, two brothers Larry and Russell Thompson, one sister Virginia Jones and her husband Don, one son-n-law, Glen Montriuel, four stepchildren, Lisa Naven, Linda Barreras, Lazette Swearinger, Mickey Sherrill, and a great-grandchild, Briggs Thompson.
