Duane Fordyce Conkey, 93, of Rock Valley, IA, formerly of Sioux City, IA, passed away June 20, 2026. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Burial with military honors will be at Logan Park Cemetery.

Duane was born on March 22, 1933, at home in Jackson, NE to Ben and Lucille (Bloomfield) Conkey. He grew up in Jackson, attending country school, moving to Sioux City in 1947, attending North Junior and graduating from Central High School. He was united in marriage to Doree’ Johns on November 2, 1952, making their home for a short time in Seneca, Kansas before settling in Sioux City.

He joined the United States Navy from 1953–55 and served during the Korean War and was also in the Naval Reserves. Duane worked at Roberts Dairy for 5 years before joining the Sioux City Fire Department in 1960, where he served for 32 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Iowa Firefighters Association, the American Legion Post 0697, was an airplane pilot, and had been a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church since November 3, 2008.

Those left to honor his memory include his children: Charisse (Don) Klein of Rock Valley, IA, Joel (Debbie Sachau) Conkey of Sioux Falls, SD, and Scott (Wendy Baker) Conkey of Ashland, VA; 7 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; a brother, Frank Conkey of South Sioux City, NE, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Doree’ and a brother, Raymond Conkey.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southern Hills Baptist Church General Fund.
