Obituary

Dorothy Mae Vander Weil (née Morgan), of Sioux City, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 23, 2025. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation 9:30-11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

She was born to Luther M. Morgan and Clara Johnson on September 11, 1930. After graduating from Central High School she worked as a legal secretary. She met the love of her life, Cecil, and they wed on February 13, 1951. Through this union four children were born. Dorothy and Cecil raised their children and spent their life in Sioux City. Dorothy worked and later volunteered as a lunch lady and playground supervisor at Whittier Elementary School for over thirty years. After retirement and volunteering she enjoyed visiting and playing cards at the Senior Center. Dorothy did not know a stranger, as she had the gift of gab. She came by it honestly, often retelling of her father saying to her in childhood that “she’d talk to a fence post if only it’d talk back”. She truly loved all children—hers, her grandkids, great grandkids and all the many school children she looked after over the years.

Dorothy was a devout Christian Scientist her whole life, in later years attending church “on the computer” as she would say. A frequent Bible reader and the one whom everyone in the family would take their worries to, to have her keep in prayer and give to God. As the most faithful person in the family, she truly lived in a Christ-like way in that she was more than open to having a good-spirited conversation about religion, even with people of differing opinion, or non-believers alike and never with judgment, but always choosing love first.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Terry Jessen, and her son Dane, his wife Christy and their sons Jesse and Jeremiah of Sioux City. Her son, Greg, his wife Zoe of Wayne, NE, and their daughter Michaela, her partner Chris and their children Cayson, Rayna and Mya of Lincoln, NE; and their son, Bren and his wife Stephanie of San Marcos, TX. Her son, Wayne, and his wife Tara of Sioux City and their son Kevin, his partner Casey and their daughter Ellie Mae of Ankeny, IA; and their daughter, Grace of Sherman Oaks, CA. Her daughter Nancy, and her husband Aaron Osterbuhr of Sioux City and their children Michael, and his sons Hank and Colt; their son Brody, his wife Kole and their son James; and their daughter Emily and her partner, Sebastian, of Sioux City.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cecil, her brothers Cecil Morgan and Buzzy Morgan, and son-in-law Jim Jessen.
