Obituary

Dorothy R. Becker, 92 of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa passed away Thursday, January 19, 2023, at a local nursing home. Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.

She was raised in Arlington, Iowa, and graduated from Arlington High School.  Despite life not always being easy, Dorothy was a strong, hard-working woman who lived and loved life with great faith, love, and courage.  Dorothy married Clifford Becker in 1952, and they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they raised their family.

Dorothy had the wonderful gift of being very creative and used that gift every day of her life in a great variety of ways.  She was an accomplished cake decorator (making many wedding cakes), and winning 1 st prize at the State Fair one year.  She enjoyed painting (both oil and china), crocheting, knitting, embroidering, and quilting as well as creating unique Christmas decorations and elaborate Santa Claus cookies which she shared with all her family and friends.

After raising their family of four children and retiring, Dorothy and Clifford spent a number of years traveling.  They would take different routes to see the various parts of the country as they made their way to their main destination, one of their children’s families, where they would spend several months before moving on to visit the next family.  Dorothy’s greatest joy in life was being with her children and grandchildren.

After retiring from traveling in 2008, Dorothy and Clifford settled in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.  They were members of the United Methodist Community Church and Dorothy proudly participated in the Prayer Shawl Ministry.  In 2016, Dorothy and Clifford entered the Embassy Rehab and Care Center together.  The Prayer Shawl Ministry moved their weekly meetings to the Embassy to keep Dorothy part of the group.  The group would spend an hour each week in the conference room socializing and knitting their prayer shawls, with the Embassy staff providing snacks and drinks for them.  Unfortunately, this came to a stop with the safety precautions for dealing with Covid.

Dorothy is survived by her four children: Ellen Cosgrove, Leslie Becker, John Becker, and Ruth (Arlen) Dean, nine grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents (Otto and Ruth Bartels), husband (Clifford), and brother (Raymond Bartels).
