Donald "Wiz" L. Hintz

Donald "Wiz" Lee Hintz, 72, of Sioux City, IA, passed away at a local hospital on March 30, 2026. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

Don was born on June 6, 1953, to Leroy and Wanda Hintz. After graduating from Lawson-Bronson High School, Don enlisted in the Army. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Western Iowa Tech, becoming a journeyman plumber and later a master plumber, taking jobs throughout the Midwest and the Rocky Mountains.

Don was always an avid athlete throughout his life and enjoyed many sports and hobbies. Softball was a passion from a young age into later adulthood. Fishing was a way of life for him, mostly because it gave him a reason to tell stories about the size of the fish he caught or almost caught. Hunting was another passion he enjoyed, from the hunt to the table. He had an appreciation for all animals, even watching and feeding hummingbirds. Gardening was something else that brought him outside soaking up the sun to harvesting his produce, especially his tomatoes.

Don passed away with some of his favorite things: cigarettes, a deck of cards, Packers attire on, and his daughter by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Wanda Hintz; his brothers, Dave Hintz; Dean Cooke; and many other family and friends.

He is survived by his son, Andy Hintz of Casper, Wyoming; his daughter, Molly (Adam) Johnson of Prescott Valley, Arizona; his sister, Leann (Dave) Schemmel; his brother, Gene (Debbie) Cooke of Volin, South Dakota; his grandson, Christopher Johnson; his nieces, Tiffany (Bruce) Burks and Tabitha (Paxton) Ubbinga; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins; his bonus family, Bob and Debbie Packard; and other family and friends who will miss him dearly.

As for Don’s wishes, there will be no service or funeral as he only wanted to be cremated. Instead, those who knew him are encouraged to honor his memory in their own way: have a beer or five, a cigarette or a pack, tell a few good stories, make others laugh, listen to good music, grill up a steak, bullshit with anyone you meet and go fishing because we all know that’s what he’s doing.
