Rev.Donald William Sturges, age 82, of Sioux City, passed away at Embassy Health Care Center, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, on March 16, 2015, with family present.
Services will be held 11:00am Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Glendale Baptist Church with Reverend Jim Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4pm-8pm Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Avenue.
Donald was born March 10, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Stephen and Daisy (Stockwell) Sturges. He grew up in the Kelly Park area of Sioux City and attended Sioux City Schools and graduated from Central High School in Sioux City. He also received a bachelor’s degree in Theology from Siouxland Christian College (an affiliate of Kingsway Fellowship International) in 1993.
He married Geraldine Wilson on November 17, 1951. Donald and Geraldine made their home in Sioux City. To this union four children were born – Karen, Gary, Lonny, and Dan.
Donald worked at Container Corporation for 42 years. (Now known as Rock Tenn Smurfit-Stone) At the same time he was a part-time night manager at McDonalds on Hamilton Blvd. in Sioux City. He also did remodeling in several homes in the Sioux City area. Along with that he built a new home for his family. Donald was not afraid of hard work.
His hobbies included cooking holiday meals for his family including making a variety of candies each year for the enjoyment of his family. He loved doing crafts and shared them with family, friends and his church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He enjoyed yard work and gardening and working on projects in their home. He and Geraldine enjoyed traveling with their family through the years to California, Washington State, Yellowstone National Park, Nashville, Tennesee, and the Black Hills. Donald loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Over the years he was very involved with his church, Glendale Baptist Church. He and Geraldine ministered to shut-ins, ministered in music, taught classes, preached in nursing homes, and filled in at the church for the minister. He was proud of being a deacon in his church. Donald had a servant’s heart and served his church and family in numerous areas through the years.
Survivors include his children, Karen Riedmann of Sioux City, Gary (Ginice) Sturges of Hermosa, South Dakota, Lonny (Karen) Sturges of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dan (Kathy) Sturges, of Sioux City, Iowa, two brothers, John (Daphene) of Sioux City, Jerry Sturges of Sioux City, one sister Valorie Hapzenbahler of Alliance, Nebraska, and 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Donald also had many nephews and nieces and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine, his parents, five brothers and seven sisters.
