Obituary

Derla “Jean” (Yada) Burr, 80, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2014 at a local hospital.
Services will be held 1:30 pm, Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church. A visitation will be held 5-7:30 pm, Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Avenue.

Jean was born on February 4, 1934 on a farm outside of Rockham, South Dakota to Hafler and Lora (Levtzow) Yada. She went to a small country school through the 8th grade and finished her high school education staying at her grandparents in Redfield, South Dakota. She then attended and graduated from Presentation School of Nursing in Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1955. Her first nursing job was in Rapid City, South Dakota where she met her husband, Arthur Burr, who passed away December 14, 2013.

Jean and Art were married in Rockham, South Dakota January 4, 1956. Art and Jean moved many times during the first 10 years of their marriage, finally settling down in Sioux City in 1974 where she was a nurse at St Vincent’s hospital before moving to Sunrise Manor. She then retired from Billy Sunday (Countryside) Retirement home after 17 years.

Art and Jean spent their retirement years traveling. They were Texas snowbirds for 20 years. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her four daughters, Lori (Shaune) FitzGerald of Laporte, MN, Pamela (David) Davies of Sioux City, Deanne (Dan) Scott of Erie, PA and Lisa (Derek) Richardson of Sioux City. Nine grandchildren, Amanda Hansen, Michelle Modlin, Robert Horkey, Stephanie Davies, Eric Horkey, Jana Thole, Megan FitzGerald, Joseph Scott and Paul Scott. Eight great-grandchildren, Tayler Modlin, Devon Hansen, Addisen Freeman, Brayden Modlin, Brandon Hansen, Carter Modlin, Jude Thole, Camden Doscher and Claire Thole. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to Art, Jean is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janet Lee, her parents, Hafler and Lora Yada, and her brothers Leland and Daryl Yada.
