Obituary

David Menard, 86 of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa passed away Monday, November 7, 2022, after a long battle with cancer.  Services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday November 14, 2022, with a prayer service at 7:00 at the Church.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Salix.  Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff is assisting the family with arrangements.

David Menard was born November 6, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa the son of Joel and Grace (Owen) Menard.  He was raised on a farm that he loved near Sergeant Bluff.  David Graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School and continued his education at the University of Nebraska and at Morningside College.  On January 16, 1960, David married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Lussier, and together they made their home in Sergeant Bluff.

In June of 1960, David joined the Army Reserve.  He was honorably discharged in 1966.  Over the years he worked in the Building Supply Business as a salesman.  David loved people and enjoyed calling on his customers.  He was a hard worker, a straight shooter and was well liked by his customers as he formed many lifelong friendships.  In the late 1980’s he found his passion and together with his wife Shirley built, owned, and operated Menard’s Self Storage in Sergeant Bluff.  He loved owning his own business and would often say that he never had a bad day as he was working at his mini storage property.

David was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salix and a member of the Kiwanis Club.  David loved spending time with and raising his family.  He was always involved with his kid’s school activities and never missed a track or wrestling meet

He enjoyed a beautiful retirement spending his winters in Arizona with his wife Shirley, golfing with his friends, and woodworking.  He spent many hours in his shop creating beautiful wooden boxes and many other works of art using exotic and hard to find wood.  Each box he made had a story behind it and was personally signed and dated.  He gave them away to his family and friends.  It was his way of just wanting to be remembered for years to come.  Simply put, David loved people.  The words “I love you” easily flowed off his tongue and his quick wit and humor just made you want to be near him.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; four children, Bradley (Angela) Menard, Cynthia (Steve) Polich, Julie (Don) Van Dyke, and Joel (Chen) Menard; nine grandchildren, Leslee, Ryan, Justin, Ben, Michelle, Jordan, Chris, Kyle and Caleb; twelve great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beth Hickey.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three siblings, Artel, Constance and Owen.

The family will direct memorials to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Sergeant Bluff Luton Track Scholarship.
