Obituary

David A. "Dave" Hanson, 87 of Sioux City, died Thursday, February 8, 2024, at his residence.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, with visitation one hour prior to service time. A private burial with family will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors by the US Air Force and American Legion.

David Alvin Hanson was born on January 27, 1937, in Austin, Minnesota the son of Alvin and Mildred (Kolpin) Hanson. Dave graduated in 1955 from the Austin High School and in 1956 enlisted in the Air Force. He was proud to receive the Airman of the Month Award in 1957. While stationed at the Sioux City Air Base, he met Phyllis Carlson, and they were married on October 27, 1959.

After his Honorable Discharge, Dave worked at IBM in Rochester, Minnesota. The family moved to Sioux City in 1963 where he worked at IPS, later Mid-American Energy. He worked his way up to Supervisor of Substation and Electric Meter Shop, retiring in 2001.

Dave was also active in the area, coaching Little League Baseball and rebuilding carburetors and building Cushman scooters with his nephew Dick Carlson. He had an immense amount of knowledge on many subjects and was always willing to use that knowledge to help others. He helped build race cars, motors, decks, home improvement projects, and too many others to mention. He was well known for his carving and woodworking skills, with some of his work on display throughout the world. In his later years, he made countless cool wooden cars and trucks for kids to play with. He loved attending his grandkids' sporting events and activities. He was a member of the Westlawn Presbyterian Church, North Riverside Masonic Lodge and the Morningside American Legion Post 697. Dave enjoyed attending car cruises with the Stroller's Car Club of Sioux City. Dave heard the start of the cruise organized in his honor that cruised past his house the night he passed.

Dave is survived by his wife Phyllis; sons Todd (Becky) Hanson, Mark (Shonn) Hanson and Troy (Deb) Hanson; daughter Penny (Rick) Comstock; grandchildren Haley (Andrew) Sedivy, Amber (Blake) Dunning, Keaton (Jenna) Comstock, Kaleb Comstock, Kyle Hanson, Zach Hanson, Kayla Hanson and Brooke Hanson; great-grandchildren Beau Dunning, Axel Dunning, Jase Sedivy, Reid Sedivy and Liam Comstock; his brother John (Bobbi) Hanson and sisters Pat Magee, Cynthia Hinkle and Suzie Hoffman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Duane Hanson, a sister Deanna Tischer, and special niece Karen Watterson.
