Carolyn L. Smith, 73 of Sioux City, formerly of Sergeant Bluff, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at a local hospital. A visitation with family will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Carol was born on February 15, 1943, in Sioux City, the daughter of Howard and Marion (Olson) Baker. She graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Following high school, Carol married Robert Smith, he passed away in 1971.
Carol was a homemaker for many years until she returned to school to earn an Associate’s degree in computer programming in 1982 from Western Iowa Tech. She worked as a programmer analyst at Security National Bank and later worked at The Bluff Stop and Mike’s Mini Mart in Sergeant Bluff. Carol was an avid reader throughout her life and enjoyed writing poetry. As newlyweds, Carol and Robert loved to travel the country. For many years, Carol was very involved with the Sergeant Bluff Alumni Association.
Survivors include her children: Jeni Johnson of Sioux City and William “Bill” Smith and his wife Dian of Biloxi, Mississippi, and, brothers: Elbert “E.B.” Baker and his wife Sandy of Sergeant Bluff, John Baker and his wife Anne of Texas, and Charles Baker of California, sister: Virginia Baker of Sioux City, grandchildren: Dhiana and Yssa, and great grandchildren: Reid and Sawyer.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Stuart Smith, and sister Elaine Parisi.
