Bruce Addison Morrison was born on October 11, 1936, to Mearle & Mildred Morrison. He attended Sergeant Bluff Community School District where he met Anne Fymbo. They were married on June 26, 1960, at the Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. Together they had four children, Jeffrey Alan, Gregory Bruce, Laura Anne, and Jay Edward.

Bruce attended Morningside College for a year studying Pre-Law but decided instead to enter in the family business and become a typographer. He began as an apprentice at the Sioux City Journal. At one time there were three generations of Morrisons all working in the composing room. His sister Jane was also working at the Journal in the distribution department.

Bruce was at the Journal for the transition from “Hot Lead” where words were cast using molten lead, to “Cold Type” where computers began to be used to print newspapers.

After 23 years, Bruce decided to strike out on his own and in 1977 he and Anne opened Morrison Printing Company in Sergeant Bluff to do commercial printing.  A little while later he saw a need in the community for a local newspaper and began publishing the Sergeant Bluff Advocate on Sept 14, 1978.

Bruce and Anne were inseparable working side by side for 26 years before selling the Advocate and retiring in 2003.

Bruce was very active in the community. He belonged to various service organizations such as local Moose Lodge and the Sergeant Bluff Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Sergeant Bluff Fire Rescue Department from 1977 - 1989. “He also regularly donated blood to the Siouxland Blood Bank and his donation record was stated as “too numerous to count.”

He took great pride in his yard work, mowing three quarters of an acre around the house he and Anne built in 1965. He was an avid golfer and loved playing golf with his friends and sons. He loved watching and talking about the Iowa State Cyclones, and he was also known to watch the Hawkeyes play. He enjoyed grilling and cooking, and “Grandpa’s Spaghetti” was always a hit.

Bruce is survived by his wife Anne, sons Jeffrey (Stephanie) of Spirit Lake Iowa, Gregory (Lori) of Le Mars, Iowa, and Jay (Joanna) of Sergeant Bluff Iowa. The grandfather of five grandchildren, Leah Anne, Emily Rose, Joshua Logan, Zachary Jay, and Daniel Thomas, and four great grandchildren Noah, Magdalena, Evelyn, Moses.

He is preceded in death by his daughter Laura, his parents Mearle and Mildred, and his sister Jane.

In newspaper parlance, “30” was used to indicate the end of a story.  So today we put “30” to the life of Bruce Morrison as we have come to the end of his story, but never to his memory.
