Obituary

Bill Maupin, 91 of Sergeant Bluff, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his residence.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, April 25; at Waterbury Funeral Home in Sergeant Bluff from 6pm to 8pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Bill was born June 10, 1922, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Florence Sara (Muller) and Morris Luverne Maupin. In 1923 the family purchased the pharmacy in Lawton, IA where Bill grew up. He graduated from Lawton High School in 1940.

He attended Iowa State University for one year studying Pre-Forestry. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in the Solomon Islands and other areas in the Pacific during World War II. He then served two years in the Active Reserves in the 18th Infantry Battalion while attending Creighton University in Omaha. He graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in 1948.

On August 18, 1948, he married Frances Jean Blankenship at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, IA. They owned and operated Maupin’s Pharmacy in Sergeant Bluff, which Bill’s father had stated in 1942. After closing the drug store in 1969, Bill worked for Toller’s Drug Store and then White Drug Store until his retirement.

Frances passed away on November 13, 2009. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage.

Bill served on the Pioneer Bank Board of Directors for 15 years. He was a member of the Sgt.Bluff Fire Department for 25 years. He has been a member of the American Legion George Nelson Post #662 since 1945, serving as Finance Officer for 25 years. He was a 50 year member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association and a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association.

After Bill and Frances raised their 6 children they enjoyed traveling to many U.S. destinations, especially Las Vegas. Bill loved to hunt and he collected live ammunition since childhood. He enjoyed nature and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his children, Sara (Rich) Crawford of Sioux City, Mark Maupin of Anchorage, AK, Paul Maupin of Willow, AK, Jean Maupin (Howard Loveall) of Sgt. Bluff, Anne (Rol) Cook of Sgt. Bluff, and daughter-in-law Sue Cook of Sgt. Bluff; 13 grandchildren, Robin (Brent) Monckton, Tesa Maupin, Amity Maupin, Raina (Hiram) Rios, Mara (Nick) Jorgensen, Becca Ricard (Kevin Strom), Zak Cook, Richard Crawford III, Jessie (Andrew) Heller, Rhobia (Paul) Brewer, Bill Crawford, Theresa (Chris) Meredith, and Zeb Cook; 16 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Colleen (Gordon) Powell, Seaside, Ore.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his youngest son, Eric Maupin, and grandson-in-law, Mike Ricard.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion George Nelson Post #662 or the Sergeant Bluff Fire and Rescue Department.
