Betty Jean Johnson, 100, of Sioux City, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 19, 2025 at a local hospital. A celebration of Betty's life will be held Saturday, February 8 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior at Grace United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.
Betty was born on June 3, 1924, in Gregory, South Dakota, to Mable and Dr. Frank Vaughn. She was the fourth daughter in a family filled with love and laughter.
On June 17, 1944, Betty married the love of her life, Dr. Robert Johnson, beginning a partnership full of love, adventure, and family. Together, they raised four children: Julie Davies, Doug Johnson, Mark Johnson, and Jay Johnson.
Betty lived a rich and fulfilling life. She served as the society editor for the Fort Morgan Times in Fort Morgan, Colorado, where her sharp wit and talent for storytelling left a lasting mark. After retiring, Betty dedicated her time to helping others, particularly through volunteering at Morgan Community College, where she taught English as a Second Language.
Betty and her family shared a deep love of music which made family gatherings unforgettable. Whether it was a spontaneous singalong or a generational contest to see who could sing "Cowboy Joe" the fastest—complete with dance moves that often tipped the scales in favor of a winner—music and laughter were always at the heart of these cherished moments. While some family members were undeniably talented and others, as Betty would lovingly note, “not so much,” the shared joy of these gatherings created memories that will last a lifetime. Her family—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren—were her greatest pride and joy.
Later in life, Betty moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where she spent many happy years at The Pointe at Sunrise Manor. There, she formed cherished friendships and continued to live life with grace and kindness.
Betty is survived by her children: Julie (Lynelle) Davies, Doug (Sherry) Johnson, Mark (Sandi) Johnson, and Jay (Alex) Johnson. She also leaves behind a legacy of love in her grandchildren: Stephen (Jen) Johnson, Stephannie (Neil) Weidner, Rich (Katie) Weimer, Cassie (Brandon) Risetter, Amanda (Patrick) Johnson Salazar, Beth (Ed) Muller, David (Donna) Johnson, Monique Johnson, Tom Davies, Mikaela Johnson Vaal, and Cathy (Steven) Ernest. Her family tree continues to grow with her many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her devoted parents, Dr. Frank and Mable Vaughn, who instilled in her a love of family and community; her beloved husband, Robert Johnson, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and partnership; her treasured sisters, Violet, Lois, and Frances, who were her closest confidants and lifelong friends; her cherished granddaughter, Tracy Valdez, who brought immense joy and light to her life; and her special friend, Hank Giese, whose companionship brought her comfort and happiness in later years.
Betty’s warmth, humor, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who knew her.
