Obituary

Betty J. Hovland, 85 of North Sioux City, died Sunday, October 21, 2012 at her residence.

A service will be held 11 am Friday at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Rev. Del Olivier officiating. A celebration of her life will be on Thursday from 5-7 pm with the family present including an informal 6 pm Prayer Service at the church. Private burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Betty was born on March 28, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of C.Victor and Dena (Engen) Dahlman. She was the youngest of four children. She graduated in 1945 from Central High School.and married Robert V. Hovland on May 4, 1946 in Sioux City. Betty co-owned and operated Hovland Manufacturing Co. with her husband where they made ladies and girls slacks, jeans and sportswear. Robert died on November 28, 1981.

Betty was a life-long Lutheran, and member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed reconnecting with her family in the “Old Country”.

Betty was an avid golfer, holding memberships at Morningside Country Club, Elk Point Country Club, Floyd and Sun Valley ladies leagues and at the Martin Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas.

Betty met Pat Burnight in 1987. They wintered in Mission, Texas at Enchanted Valley Ranch. They enjoyed playing golf and cards while socializing with the many friends they made. Betty loved to shop, anytime/anyplace. She enjoyed traveling with her family and liked to cook and entertain friends and family. She was able to have a good 85 years of fun and laughter.

Betty is survived by Pat Burnight; and children, Julie Hovland of Sioux City, Mary Anne (Tom Oehlerking) Hovland of Sgt Bluff; Bill (Kathy) Hovland of Cody, Wyoming, and David (Kim) Hovland of Sioux City , Dee (Jerry) Grangaard of Elk Point, Dennis Burnight of Jefferson, SD and Terry Burnight of Sioux City; grandchildren, Derek Hovland, Melanie (Chris) Hinton, Lara (Ben)Shukar, Justin Hovland, Austin Tonner, Seth Tonner and Espen Hovland, Chris Parent, Cary Parent, Curt Parent, Cindy (Eric) Choquette, Chelly Donley DeeAnna (Ricky)Scott of Sioux City and Chad (Rebecca) of McCook Lake and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Robert, an infant daughter, Roberta Lynn, and brothers: Robert, Walter, Clifford Dahlman, Brad Burnight.
