Obituary
ARTHUR E. KERN, 83, longtime resident of Westfield, Iowa passed away Friday, December 5, 2014 in the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Services will be held on December 13, 10:30 a.m. at the Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City, 4125 Orleans Ave. with Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Online condolences can be left at www.waterburyfuneralserviceinc.com.
Art was born August 6, 1931 at Sioux City, Iowa, the fifth child of Emil Bruno Kern II & Margaret (Chalmers) Kern. He attended East High School graduating in January 1951. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church. He married his high school sweetheart Dono D. Whitman of Sioux City, Iowa on March 16, 1951. Together they raised five children; Virginia “Ginger”, Ted, Lori, Barb and John.
Art served in the Korean War as a Marine from 1951 to 1953 where he operated large artillery and drove a supply truck. Art worked at Walinsky Lumber Company, operated his own “Handy Man” business, was employed by IBP and farmed 80 acres. Art loved his wife and children, enjoyed laughing and telling stories, watching westerns and playing cribbage. Art purchased the farm in 1958 where he enjoyed living in the country and farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dono on October 8, 1995, one son John on July 10, 1999; three sisters and one brother; Mildred, Nona, Joan, and Robert Kern.
He is survived by one son; Ted (Pat) Kern of Le Mars, Iowa, three daughters; Ginger (Doug) Wanned of Westfield, Iowa, Lori (Lyle) Clingenpeel of Sioux City, Iowa, and Barb Dinelli of Quimby, Iowa. One sister; Eugenia “Genie” Saunders. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
