Anna was born on November 11, 1933 to Marie V (Parker) Osterloh and Lawrence J Osterloh in Marysville, KS. She spent her preschool years in a home in Blue Rapids, KS before the young family moved to Marysville, KS. They were joined by brother Jerry when Anna Marie was 4 and sister Carol when she was 10. Another brother, Richard died as an infant.
At the age of 17 she won a national contest in shorthand and after graduating High School in 1951, was hired by Northwestern Bell Engineering Department in Kansas City to be the Administrative Assistant for 5 Engineers. It was there that she met her future husband, John E Curfman, at a USO dance while he was in the Air Force. They married in the Marysville First Christian Church on May 24, 1953.
They were stationed in Topeka, KS, where they had their first daughter, Terry E on May 4, 1954. After an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, they went to Manhattan, KS where John graduated with a double major in Architecture and City Planning at K-State. It was there during his last finals week that their second daughter, Anna E, arrived on January 8, 1958.
The next move was to Waterloo, IA where John was hired in the City Planning office. In 1960 he was offered a job in Auburn, NY (on the Finger Lakes) where he provided city planning services for 13 towns. After 3 years, a massive fire destroyed all of the files and the office had to close. This brought the family to Sioux City, IA where John became Planning Director & Community Development Director and they worked on their new home on Magnolia Court. They spent almost 40 years in that home, and 52 years together, until John died following a 23 year disability from heart disease in 2005.
