Allen Zevenbergen, 84, of Sioux City, IA went to be with the Lord while surrounded by family on

September 13, 2024 at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, September 19th, at 10:30am, at Peace Reformed Church

of Sioux City with Pastor Jason Van Wyk officiating. Visitation with the family will occur at the church

for the hour immediately before the service with a luncheon following. Interment will follow at

Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

Allen was born at home on May 12, 1940 in rural Sheldon, IA, the fourth of four boys born to William

and Fannie (Hagens) Zevenbergen. After a little over a year the family purchased and moved to a

farm just outside of Sioux Center. When he was ready to start high school his brothers took over the

farm and he and his parents moved to Orange City where he attended Northwestern Academy for

combined high school and college. He graduated with a degree in Music from Northwestern College

in December of 1960. During his high school years at the academy he noticed a neighbor girl who

became the love of his life. He married Tylene Kosters on her birthday, December 17,1960 so they

could move together to his first teaching job in SW Iowa. They were blessed to be married for over

   63 years.

Allen taught K-12 Vocal Music for most of his career in several schools and blessed many lives with

the joy of music. Each time there would be a new teaching opportunity they would go through a

move, four times adding a new baby to the family. Riverton; Graettinger (Debra); Summers in

Vermillion SD for a Masters Degree from USD, Sutherland (Michelle); Sioux Center (Brad); back to

Graettinger (Kathie); Lake Park; Anthon; and finally to Sioux City after Allen’s “official retirement”. Still

wanting something to do he taught two more years at Emerson, NE, subbed a couple years in Sioux

City and then part time elementary band for a couple more years at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Sioux City.

In all, spending 45 years in the classroom. Later, he and Tylene moved together to The Pointe at

   Sunrise Retirement Community.

Allen was always directing and making music. He was always busy preparing his groups for

concerts, Swing Shows, Musicals, and State Music contests, and always encouraging students who

may have thought they could not sing or perform. In the communities they moved to they always

joined a church and if not directing the choir, he played piano or sang with them. He loved visiting

with and pulling jokes on his kids, grand kids and later his great-grands. He was the king of “dad”

“grandpa” jokes even before they were a thing.

   Allen is survived by four children, Debra (Ray) Lynn, Alton, IA; Michelle (Charlie) Nelson, Le Mars, IA;
