Obituary

Alice Mae Hardyk, 88, of Sioux City, moved on to her real home in heaven when she passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 2 nd , at a local hospital. Funeral Services will be held 11:00am Monday, August 9, 2021 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with Pastors Russell Senstad and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5pm-7pm Sunday, August 8, with a prayer service at 6pm at the church.

Alice was born on April 7, 1933, in Piper, Iowa, to Richard and Hulda (Johnson) Berg. She was the last baby to be born at home on the family farm, the same house her own mother was born in. The 7 th girl in a row in a family of 12, she was nicknamed “Billie” for the jeans she wore. The family grew up across the road from Scarborough Lutheran Church where her dad rang the bell every Sunday to call to worship. Her faith was so important to her.

After graduating high school in Rockwell City, Alice attended nurses’ training in Fort Dodge. But a blind date with a guy who had the best smile ever changed everything. On January 16, 1955, Alice married the love of her life, Anton “Tony” Hardyk. The couple farmed just outside of Sac City. When their first child was born, Alice fulfilled her dream of being a wife and mother. The family of three moved to Sioux City in 1959 when Tony started his career with Ozark Airlines. Two more children made the family complete. Alice loved being able to cook, bake and sew for her family. She was a true home maker.

Alice was active in her church, and was known for baking “yardsticks.” She was always quick with a smile and a warm greeting. She was a charter member of the Crimson Belles. Alice was proud of her Swedish heritage and enjoyed being a member of VASA. A wine named in her honor, “Aunt Billie,” just won a Gold Medal and Best of Show Red at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Tony; daughters Rhonda (Kirk) Clausen of Henderson, Nevada; Melanie (Roy) Olsen of Sioux City; son Tim (Denée) of Le Mars; grandchildren Trent, Trevor, Kalin, Max, and Mackenzee; great-granddaughters Alayna and Denver; sisters-in-law Rachel, Judy, Shirley, and Dorothy; brother-in-law Norman; and many nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws Anton and Hattie Hardyk; her siblings Carl, Elmer, Mildred, Irene, Laura, Gladys, Evelyn, Pauline, Mervin, Junior, and Alan; 4 sisters-in-law and 8 brothers-in-law.

Memorials may be directed to Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Food Bank of Siouxland.
