Obituary

Alan "Al" Shilling, 85, of Sioux City, IA, passed away October 19, 2024, at a local hospital.  A funeral service will be held Friday, October 25, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Sioux City Baptist Church.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7:00 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service.

Alan, born on May 1, 1939, in Ottumwa, IA to Henry and A. Muriel (Landgrebe) Shilling. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1958. He married the love of his life, Marcella McCoy, on November 2, 1958, with whom he shared nearly 66 wonderful years.

Alan began his career at Amana Refrigeration in Amana, IA, where he worked for 13 years. They would later move back to Ottumwa, IA where he would start his long-time career with John Morrell & Co. This job would eventually require him to transfer to several places such as St. Paul, MN, Fergus Falls, MN, and his final transfer to Sioux City, IA. He worked various positions until he rose to the role of plant manager. His employees said he was an understanding but firm boss. He “retired” after 26 years with the company.

After “retiring”, he founded a cleaning business and, at the same time, bought a laundromat in Morningside, which his wife would manage for five years. Eventually, his oldest son would take over the cleaning business and he would begin working for his youngest son at his new window business. Later the window business was sold, and he was offered a job at Congregation Beth Shalom as their custodian but eventually turned into the man of all trades. From van driver, decorator, door greeter, party shopper to operations director. He did it all with a twinkle in his eyes and a big smile on his face. After 15 years at the Synagogue, Alan finally retired once more, this time due to his health.

Alan cherished his family and took pride in attending every event possible for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and going on cruises with his wife, brother and sisters, going on walks, cleaning his yard and driveway, washing his vehicles, and Eagle watching. He was most known for his bargain shopping. If he wasn’t at work or home, you could find him in the clearance aisle or the local flea markets, buying stuff for his friends and family. He also enjoyed drawing and coloring; in his last years he created several books for his great grandchildren. He was a member of Sioux City Baptist church for 50 years.

He had a kind and compassionate heart and was always eager to help others. Anything he did, he did with the biggest smile on his face. He had a feisty attitude until the very end.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife; Marcella, two sons, Todd (Machelle) Shilling of Salix, IA, Carry (Rana) Shilling of Sergeant Bluff, IA; one daughter, Christina Campbell of Sioux City, IA, 6 grandchildren, Andrew (Rachel Myers) Shilling, Caitlin (Jake Humphrey) Shilling, Brittany (Taylor Schroeder) Campbell, Kelsey (Shea) Corey, Abigal Shilling, Tyler (Mianna Rehman) Campbell, 2 great grandchildren; Isabella Ford and Kaden Corey and one sister Barbara Suechting of Winters, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; Lawrence Shilling and two sisters; Erma Miller and Joyce Larson.

He will be deeply missed. His legacy of kindness, hard work, and love for his family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
