Adele M. Wood, 104 years young, a lifelong resident of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on January 18 , 2021, at Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City. Visitation will be from 5-7pm Thursday, January 28 , at Waterbury Funeral Home of Sioux City, Graveside services will be Friday, January 29 , at 12:00 pm at Memorial Park. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Funeral Services will be held Online via the Zoom application with Reverend Patricia Wood leading the service on Feb 6 , 2021 at 1:00 pm CST and will be live streamed to a TV at St. James United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, Adele has requested that memorials may be directed to the St. James United Methodist Church of Sioux City or Siouxland Center for Active Generations or to the Siouxland Sleep Out.
Adele was born July 27, 1916 in Sioux City to Milo and Virginia O’Harrow. They were descendants of pioneers of Sioux City. She attended the original Washington Elementary School, East Junior High, and graduated from East High School in mid-year 1934. Following graduation, she attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City. She pursued a secretarial career in the offices of the County Social Welfare Department, U.S. Dept of Agriculture in Des Moines and Sioux City, the County Clerk's Office as well as insurance claim offices.
She was united in marriage to Paul A. Wood at the Morningside Presbyterian Church in 1948. Paul was a linotype operator at the Sioux City Journal newspaper and the Denver Post. She was a Girl Scout and Girl Reserve member during her school years, and later a Girl Scout group leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. When WWII was declared she volunteered to help type draft cards at Longfellow Elementary School and was surprised when she typed up one of her four brothers, Gordon’s, draft card.
She was a former member of the Sioux City Garden Club and a longtime Life Member of the Siouxland Senior Center. She was active in the Senior Center Chorus and a Tap-Dancing group. Both groups performed in the Senior Divisions at the Iowa State Fair and at many retirement homes. The chorus group won first place three years in a row at the Fair and decided not to attend the fourth year so that another group could take first place. She is a member of the St. James United Methodist Church, UMW, and active in Circles. She survived the 1918 pandemic, survived cancer when she was 100, and recovered from Covid-19 when she was 104.
Adele, Paul and their 3 sons enjoyed many family vacations and camping trips traveling to Minnesota, Canada, Colorado, New Mexico, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore, Grand Canyon and Chicago. During other parts of the year they enjoyed trips to Okoboji to visit aunts, uncles & cousins along with swimming, fishing, and fun at Arnolds Park. Adele and Paul also enjoyed trips to California, Alaska and Hawaii.
Survivors include sons, Paul C. Wood of Sioux City, Brian (Patricia) Wood of California; grandchildren, Anthony (Stacey) Sacco; David (Monique) Sacco of California, great-grandchildren, Michael & Emma Sacco; Natalie, Camille & Elizabeth Sacco, brother, Robert O’Harrow of Arizona, sister-in-law, Mary Ellen O’Harrow of Sioux City, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Adele was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul A. Wood, son, Douglas Wood, brothers, Leonard (Wilma) O’Harrow, Gordon O’Harrow, Warren (Peg) O’Harrow, and sister, Evelyn O’Harrow Davis.
